According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational outlook handbook, employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 9 percent from 2020 to 2030. About 194,500 openings for registered nurses are projected each year, on average, over the decade. There is high demand for healthcare services because of the large number of older people, who typically have more medical problems than younger people. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire.
Employment growth is also projected to be much faster than average in outpatient care centers, where patients do not stay overnight, such as those that provide same-day chemotherapy, rehabilitation, and surgery.
